GCSE Geography Conference

A Geography GCSE Conference was arranged by Mr Terry on the 5th February. Dr Gravestock from the University of Gloucester came in to do a decision making exercise on a volcanic eruption. Using Geographical and Geological knowledge he helped the pupils predict when the volcano might erupt using a diary of events. Pupils thought it was interesting to consider when to evacuate the nearby towns.

Geography Association 'World Wide' Quiz

On a grim November evening, many schools across the Herefordshire region, gathered for the annual Geography Association ‘World Wise’ Quiz. With some enthralling contests in recent years, tonight promised to be a tense affair. In retrospect, this year’s competition did not disappoint concerning entertainment value. Rounds featured the Geography of Sport, Mixed Bag, Alphabet Run, name the Mountain and the Ordinance Survey round. Our knowledgeable HCS team comprised Darcy Murphy, Charlie Scotcher and Xander Drury. A packed Zimmerman Main Hall witnessed some startling individual performances as approaching the final round three strong teams were still in contention to win the coveted trophy. After an absorbing concluding round, St. Mary’s High School prevailed as champions. Despite the HCS team finishing in a proud fourth place, we found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable event. Many thanks must go to Mrs Floyd and Mrs Hodges for organising such a lively evening. (Xander Drury 4C)

Mrs Floyd competes in Target Rifle Shooting for Wales

Mrs Floyd competes in Target Rifle Shooting for Wales. She shot in the Commonwealth Games in 1998 in Malaysia and in 2002 in Manchester. She is currently training for selection to the 2010 Games in India in 2010. The school recently supported her in her trip to Luxembourg to compete in a European Competition ‘R.I.A.C.’ :

“In my first match I shot 391/400 which was four points higher than my previous match personal best. In addition to this, it is the qualifying score for consideration for the Welsh team at the next Commonwealth Games in India 2010. I went into the Olympic Final (top eight shooters firing 10 shots shoulder to shoulder in front of a large crowd) in 5th place. I was incredibly nervous and after a tense tied shot I ended up in 6th place. The second match was a little less consistent and I finished with 384, a sound but unimpressive score. On the third day I shot 386 which was enough to get me into the final in 8th place. This is a position with nothing to lose and everything to gain; so I tried my best to relax and use it as good Olympic Final practise.”

It is the British Championships at the end of February and Mrs Floyd hopes to shoot another qualifying score to strengthen her position in the Welsh team.
