Department news: XXX About the department:

HCS BACK IN THE USSR!

About the Department

The department aims to fulfill the following ideas;

“So far as possible, every pupil shall be stimulated and enthused for the study of the past; that they shall have a working knowledge of their own country’s history, an appreciation of other cultures and, in a part of the world full of historical interest, shall have a burgeoning enthusiasm for local history.”

This is a small passionate department which lives and breathes the past. We try to use our excitement to enthuse all of our students with a love of many periods of History.

At key stage three we loosely follow the national curriculum by studying Medieval Realms, the Making of the UK and the key events of the Twentieth Century. At GCSE we follow the AQA Modern World History Course. Starting in 2008 we will offer an AS course of two modules, one on the Crusades and one on Peter the Great of Russia. At A2, from 2009, one module focuses on Britain 1865-1915 and the coursework component is a study of Winston Churchill.

The uptake of History as an option is on the increase and long may it continue.

What Happened Then Matters Now! Long Live History!

In February half term 2008, 38 students and four staff made a superb visit to Moscow and St Petersburg to further their study of History and Art. It was a great success and is no surprise that demand to return in 2009 is very high. Up the Revolution!

DIG IN!

During the summer half term, our Third Form students will be setting sail for the First World War battlefields to further their study of trench warfare. The focus will be on the Third Battle of Ypres – watch this space to see how they get on!

CASTLES EXTRAVAGANZA!

Watch out Goodrich, Raglan and Eywas Harold, the First Years are coming! In the summer term the whole First Year will be out and about in the county looking at some great castles and noting down the key differences and features in real time! Let the siege begin!
