A level Art Success

Photograph: A level Art Student with award winning portraits    A debilitating illness failed to stop Fizzy Watkins from scoring the highest mark in the country for A level Art and Design fine art. Fizzy dazzled examiners with two outstanding portraits of her farther Robert, inspired by Picasso’s Blue period, which she produced in the 15 hour examination.

It was a remarkable achievement by the Hereford Cathedral School Sixth Form student, who missed most of the first year of her studies after being struck down with glandular fever. Fizzy, whose brother and sister have also taken A level Art, was speechless when she had landed the top mark in Britain from 4,533 candidates.

‘I was just really shocked’ she said. ‘I was speechless because I couldn’t believe it. You don’t expect to get the highest mark in the country. Everybody was congratulating me and saying well done. It’s all a bit of a haze, really.’  She added: ‘I’ve always liked Art, I suppose it’s something that runs in the family, but I will have to think about my next step. The course tutors at school were very understanding of my illness and very supportive.’

Following on from her success she now plans to travel and take stock. She intends to go to Canada at the end of November to follow a ski instructor’s course before spending time in New Zealand , Australia and Malaysia .
