Dean's Scholars
Hereford Cathedral School’s prestigious Dean’s scholarships have been
awarded annually for the past four years to pupils who perform outstandingly
well in the school’s entrance examination. This year, for the first time,
seven Lower Sixth formers have joined the ranks
of these academic 11+ and 13+ scholars. There are 34 Dean’s scholars
in the school at present:- (2003) (2002)

The sixth form scholars did not earn their awards lightly. Early in the
Spring term they had to submit a letter of application to the Headmaster,
supported by two academic referees, and then spend a grueling day sitting
an adult verbal reasoning test, a critical reasoning paper and two scholarship
examinations in the subjects that they wished to study in the sixth form.
Out of the forty-four youngsters that applied, twenty were invited back
the following week for an interview with the Headmaster, the Director
of Studies and the Head of Sixth Form.
Selecting the seven Dean’s scholars was very difficult as so many candidates
demonstrated outstanding individual strengths and interests. The depth
of the applicants’ talent is reflected in the fact that in the end subject
specific awards were made to an additional eleven prospective sixth form
students and four deserving students were awarded an ‘All Round Award’
in recognition to their contributions already to the life of the school.
