INSPECTORS
PRAISE OPPORTUNITES GIVEN BY HEREFORD CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
Hereford Cathedral School, according
to the Independent Schools Inspectorate, (ISI), provides a good all-round
education and community atmosphere, and offers many opportunities to its
pupils for effective learning and personal development.
The School's clear ethos, committed staff, admirable pastoral system and
excellent relationships are highlighted. "What stands out most of all",
say the inspectors, "is the loyalty of the pupils to the school. They
appreciate the community and its benefits and are its strongest ambassadors".
The Cathedral School's library facilities, extensive activities and specialist
learning support are also commended as particular strengths.
While the School has no serious weaknesses,
the inspectors suggest that a review of its internal management procedures,
in-service teacher training provision, and marking and ICT policies will
enable pupils to reach even higher levels of attainment.
The Cathedral School's Head-teacher,
Dr Howard Tomlinson, comments: "I am particularly pleased the inspectors
have recognised that the all-round development of our pupils is an outstanding
feature of H.C.S. The significant progress made since the last inspection
- and not least the improvement of our facilities - has also been well
appreciated. These new recommendations will provide a framework for the
next phase of the school's development, and further enable pupils to reach
their full potential in all areas".
The report follows a week's inspection
early in the Autumn Term by 11 senior inspectors, who observed lessons,
assemblies and activities through the week, held formal and informal discussions
with the pupils and examined a wide range of documentation made available
by the school.
The ISI inspects schools according
to a standard inspection framework, which has been agreed with the DfES
and OFSTED, thereby ensuring that independent schools comply with legal
requirements and that standards in independent education are maintained
and improved.
