Paul Smith. Headmaster HCS September 2005
 |
The Headmaster Mr Paul Smith writes:-
'I am delighted to have been entrusted with the leadership of such a fine school, with its strong tradition for excellence in academic studies, extra-curricular pursuits and pastoral care. Winston Churchill once said, "Headmasters have powers at their disposal with which Prime Ministers have never yet been invested." I am not sure about that: for me, being appointed Headmaster of Hereford Cathedral School is more about privilege than power.

It is a privilege to observe young people grow, gradually acquiring the academic and social skills necessary to take on the various challenges of adult life. That privilege extends to helping pupils develop confidence in their own knowledge and understanding, as well as gaining confidence in themselves and those around them. It is particularly rewarding to see boys and girls surprised by their own achievements and, of course, it is wonderful to be in a position to witness so much creativity, enterprise, skill and pleasure. But the greatest privilege of all will be to play a part in shaping and further developing HCS. Already, I have been impressed by the professionalism of the staff I have met, their knowledge and care for pupils, and the pupils' affection and pride in their school. That all of this can take place in such beautiful surroundings, and in one of the nicest parts of the country, is an added bonus for us all. There are many challenges ahead for Independent Schools and hereford Cathedral School is no exception. I can assure parents, pupils and staff that my experience of teaching in four excellent schools will be put to good use. The Governing Body at Hereford Cathedral School is invested with wisdom, expertise and a genuine passion to take the school forward in the 21st century. I relish the opportunity of working with them and, whether it be greater than that invested to a Prime Minister or not, using all the power at my disposal to ensure that Hereford Cathedral School builds upon its current strengths and does indeed, move forward' |
