The President's Cup 2004

In the long awaited final of the 2004 President's Cup competition, Sarah Hunter-Choat and Chris Kent emerged victorious following two closely matched debates.

The final, appropriately judged by the President of the Debating Society, Dr. Tomlinson, saw teams debate the motions 'This House would make the unemployed work for the dole' and also 'This House supports the use of embryonic stem cell research'.

As well as welcoming many parents, we were delighted to welcome Dr. Heather Tomlinson and Emily Burdett, Amalie Fisher and Emily Warner from the Junior School, who are clearly keen debaters for the future!

In summing up, Dr Tomlinson explained that he had used 3 key criteria in arriving at his decision: evidence of research, time keeping and debating etiquette, such as responding to points of information.

He congratulated the other speakers on their fine performances but said that overall, the President's Cup for 2004 should go to Sarah and Chris. The busy Debating Society schedule continues having won the first round of the Cambridge Union competition on Friday 26th November the team now travels to the first round of the 'Mace' competition in Gloucester on Wednesday 1st December.
