Rowers triumph indoors
Cathedral athlete retains Welsh Open title

Hereford Cathedral School's rowers continued to dominate the Indoor Rowing season with victories in both the 2,000 metre and 500 metre sprint events at the Welsh Open Grand Prix event in Cardiff.

The HCS pair of Alice Osborne and Luce Edwards travelled to Wales to uphold Hereford's strong record at junior level, both winning their J15 events with something to spare.

Alice raced first, defending her Welsh title from last year where she set a new age record, and fresh from her bronze medal at the nationals. This time she cruised away from her opponents, lowering her time from last year by a second despite recovering from a cold and being comfortably ahead of her rivals for the title. At the line Alice finished 6 seconds clear of the field in a time of 8:01.0, just outside her PB.

In the sprint event it was Luce's turn to take the limelight with a stunning performance of power rowing. Luce took on all-comers with a row of controlled aggression to pull through the field to take the title in a time of 1:45.5, beating her nearest challenger to the title by 9 seconds. Incredibly her time was good enough to even defeat the women's senior open competitors to the overall title, her time being the fastest of the day and yet another record for the girls.
