Summer Sporting Success

In a gripping weekend of racing at Evesham regatta Hereford Cathedral School's Boat Club emphasised their growing reputation in junior rowing with six event wins.

QuadOver the full regatta course on Saturday, their string of wins began in the under 14 double sculls with Tomos Jones and Ed Deutsch pairing up to take the final in style, in their first ever rowing win.  Leading before the final bend, the Cathedral pair moved smoothly away from their Monmouth Comprehensive opponents leaving the cathedral boat with an easy verdict. Shortly afterwards Ed Partridge teamed up with Will Boyd-Thomas in Senior 3 doubles.  Despite being a novice, Partridge stroked the pair with some authority while Boyd-Thomas steered an immaculate course to take the final confidently in a winning verdict over the Eton Excelsior crew.

PairBoyd-Thomas then teamed up with his regular Quadruple Sculls partners Seb Smith, George Probert and Callum Corbin to challenge for the final race of the day, the Under 18 quads.  Having progressed to the final with a comfortable win over Upper Thames in their semi final, the cathedral crew felt confident they could overcome their opponents from Monmouth Comprehensive, a crew they had never lost to.  In the end it came to the wire with a final verdict of 3 feet in Cathedral’s favour – too close for comfort.

On Sunday the winning streak continued with Smith and Probert taking J18 double sculls in style when their opponents from Bridgnorth, repeatedly warned for their steering, finally received a disqualification as they steered into the cathedral boat as it crossed the line half a length ahead.    Boyd-Thomas took his third win of the weekend in Senior 3 double, this time pairing up with Corbin, before the four teamed up again to take on a determined Stourport crew in the final of J18 quads.  Cathedral put everything into the race, pulling away strongly to finish a remarkable three lengths ahead in a very fast time of 1:20 for the 500 metre course.

With Boyd-Thomas taking home 4 trophies for the weekend, and his quad team-mates three each, they remain unbeaten regionally and looking forward to a stiffer test at the National Schools Championships in the near future.
