The Bank of England 'Target 2.0' Competition
On Tuesday 23rd November some of the finest Cathedral School Economists travelled to Bristol to take part in the regional round of the ‘Target 2.0’ competition. Their task ……. in a nutshell, to tell the Bank of England representatives how to do their job and to advise them as to what level interest rates should be! The competition was held in the splendid setting of Leigh Court, a palladian style mansion located on the outskirts of Bristol which was built by Bristol’s first ever millionaire.- An appropriate setting for such discussions of high finance!
The team of Jess Davies, Fiona Laird, Paddy Keating and Ian Corder gave a 15 minute presentation on the current state of the UK and global economy which was then followed by questions from the judges. The team gave a well honed, dynamic presentation and when the judges returned they made it quite clear that the result had been extremely close. Having commended the team for their lively, energetic performance and for their use of humour, the judges declared HCS to be the runners up, therefore beating Downside School, Queen’s College Taunton, the Royal High School Bath and also Badminton College.
This result builds upon the success which HCS teams have enjoyed in previous years. In 2002, having won the regional round we were runners up in the Midlands and received a cheque for £500 and in 2003 we were runners up in the regional round. We look forward to entering the competition again next year!
