Bishop's School 1st XV v HCS U16 XV

Bishop's School 10 v Hereford Cathedral School 23

Hereford Cathedral U16 XV defeated Bishop’s 1st XV fairly convincingly at the weekend, for the second time in two seasons.

The game started with the dominant Cathedral pack pressing, for fly half Luke Cross to capitalise on the home team’s infringement, to take an early 3 – 0 lead. Bishop’s rallied well and put Cathedral under great pressure for the next ten minutes and were rewarded with a charge down and kick through for winger, Duncan Riley to just get to the touchdown.

At 5 – 3, the game started to go Cathedral’s way as they rucked well and spun the ball wide to create gaps in the Bishop’s defence. Cross converted another penalty to put Cathedral ahead and soon after crossed the line himself, after a great break by Cathedral captain and scrumhalf Freddie Anthony. With the score at 11 – 5 at the interval and a slight favourable wind in the second half for the away team, Bishop’s were under pressure to play catch up rugby for the remainder of the match.

Soon after the break Cathedral lock forward Piers Roderick was fed the ball from a five meter penalty and was unstoppable from that distance, to increase the lead to eleven points. Bishop’s flanker, Liam Herbert had some fine runs in the middle of the field and this lifted the Bishop’s pack to eventually drive over in the corner to take the score to 18 – 10. The superior Cathedral backs continued to run the ball, make ground and eventually fly half Luke Cross found a gap and converted to take the game firmly away from Bishop’s at 23 – 10. Cathedral U16 XV now play Chantry High School next week in the ¼ final of the Anglo-Welsh Cup and also defend the North Midlands U16 Cup with a ¼ final match against King Edwards School, Edgbaston.
