Record A Level Success

The publication of the nation's league tables for schools for last summer's examination results has once again demonstrated that Hereford Cathedral School is the leading academic co-educational school for Herefordshire and the Marches.

The Academic Deputy, Mr Richard Batchelor, explained that the critical statistic to identify in this annual mass of figures released by the Government is the average point score per examination entry, ‘any of the other statistics can easily be misrepresentative of the true quality of a cohort, as cumulative totals often hide a number of qualifications at a moderate level without identifying the truly high achievers and, therefore, meaningful value added performance’.

Last year's A Level Results had outstripped all previous records held by the school with a staggering 10% improvement in the percentage passes at A level at A and B grades along with a 100% pass rate at this level. Mr Richard Batchelor, the Academic Deputy, stated that 'these results reflect the dedication, enthusiasm and expertise of the teaching staff and an outstanding positive response by pupils to the supportive and collaborative educational environment that is unique to the Cathedral School' (More)

Not to be out done, the Lower Sixth, as if responding to the challenge set by their predecessors, achieved very creditable AS level results. There were some remarkable individual performances with Christine Batchelor and Pia Dowse achieving full marks in their Fine Art Examination and Paddy Keating achieving the same in his Economics Examination. Pupils also achieved excellent results at GCSE. All pupils achieved at least 5 GCSEs graded A* to C. Boys and girls did equally well and over a fifth of all grades achieved were either A* or A. Out of 23579 candidates, Liam Dunachie was amongst the top ten who achieved the highest overall marks in GCSE Music.   Liam also achieved a clean sweep of A* grades.
